Quilled Heart

This is one of the gifts we gave to my niece, Rachel, for her wedding.

I loved this quote (thanks pinterest!) and thought this Quilled Heart would add a special touch.

Quilled Heart How To:

I cut strips of paper in 1/4"x8".


Take the paper and wind it around the tool. They have quilling tools but you could use a paint brush end, pen, pencil. . .


Use a pattern to guide you. . .


Glue the end. After this one I figured out that the hot glue gun worked faster and better.


Put dabs of white glue (that will dry clear) on the bottom of the coiled paper.


Place the quilled coils onto your board to form the shape.



I did this one also.

Tidbits of Eagle {Wedding #2}

One more cake for my niece Rachel.


Her Cream Puff Cake{ aka Croquembouche = traditional French Wedding Cake}. Since there won't be enough for everyone I'll have platters with some drizzled with chocolate & caramel.

How I did it:


I covered the cake board with foil then adhered the styrofoam cone (Michael's 6"x 24" ) with carpet tape.


Crumble up the foil wrap into a long strand.


Adhere the foil strand to the cone with straight pins going up the cone like a winding stair case.


"Frost" the cone with caramel(so the cream puffs will stay a bit better) and cut the skewer sticks(about 1 1/2") to fit inside. Place almost frozen cream puffs(yes I'd love to take the credit for making these yummy treats but Costco had so many boxes- so much easier) onto each stick. I used about 130 cream puffs.


I put the same "C" I used for the other cake to top it off.

Shelving {Picture} Wall

My friend Katie is always willing to throw projects my way that challenge me and expand my talents. I love her for that!

She wanted some Shelving in her living room to display family photos.

This is how it turned out. . .


A side view of how I put the shelf together. (She is going to paint the back wood to match the wall). I used wood glue to attach the pieces then wood screws for added strength.


Her "!". [Its so that when friends & family come to visit their home, it is understood they stand for important things].

She still has a few more things to add plus some more pictures but I think it looks great so far.

"Broken Up" {Heart}

I finally finished this project just in time to use for next years Valentine's Day. Yes, its been one of those month's.


My friend, Keva, is the one who inspired me with this idea. She asked me to cut out a heart (18" tall x 9" wide)for her that was cut up to put on a board (19" long x 9 1/4" wide)so she could hang it on her front door.

I mod podged different papers on it and sanded the edges for the aged look.


I brad nailed the wood molding pieces to "hinge" the other heart pieces together.


To hang it, I cut an 1"x20" piece of fabric. Sew together and fray the edges by pulling it thru your hand.

Tidbits of Utah {Wedding #2}

We just got back from attending my niece's wedding in the Draper Temple in Utah.
My SIL is helping my talents grow by asking me to do the wedding cake again. I love baking so I know it will at least taste good even though its not perfect on the outside(still trying to get that right).


I used this for the base of the cake. Its a wall mirror-I just took the mirror out and built a wood base to fit inside.


For the top of the cake: I cut a wood "C", spray painted it silver and adorned it with rhinestones.


The ribbons with charms(charms are under the cake plate)for the "Pull Cake". Since my husbands' family is from Argentina, they have a different wedding tradition. All the girls not married get to pull a ribbon from the cake. Whoever pulls the one with the ring is the one who gets married next. I cut some PVC pipes (the same height of the bottom cake)into the bottom cake to adhere the cake plate for the next cake tier.

My heart skipped many beats when I saw the cake had fallen over. I had to fix it the best I could. I think between putting too much filling in the cake and the frosting not setting up properly, it just couldn't help but fall over. At least they will have some fun memories!

"Chips" & Dip Snack

Now that I'm trying to eat more healthy, this is one of my favorite snacks.

I cut my own "chips" from 3 tortillas(about 90 calories) and toss them in a little oil. I then sprinkle them with taco seasoning & dried cilantro flakes. Bake at 450 for 15 minutes.

The "dip is made from 1/4 cup salsa & 1/4 cup cottage cheese(about 50 calories). I know the cottage cheese sounds a little different but its good. I have a hard time just eating cottage cheese by itself so this gets my protein without me having to gag it down.
I usually will have this on the days I have a lighter salad for dinner.

Our oldest daughter wanted to jazz up her school binder.

She took paint, dipped her thumbs in it and placed it on cardstock paper.


Then she added faces, arms, legs to make people & critters of her friends.

Valentine FHE

We had one of the best Family Home Evenings last night. Not just because it was simple but it had a lot of meaningful moments.

We talked about {REAL LOVE}. I read this quote: "Real love enlarges the soul. It helps us to bite our tongue when it would be easy to say hurtful words. It gives us an understanding heart that is filled with compassion for another. It enables us to be more patient with others' imperfections and acknowledges our own. Then we each took our paper heart: wrote our own name on it, then passed it to our left so the next person could write on it. We wrote something that we LOVE about that person. We kept passing until everyone could write on each one. Lots of Laughs & Smiles!


The activity for FHE we made our {yearly} valentine tradition cookies (recipe & how to here) for their classmates.
