Ang's FHE Board & Wheel

Isn't Heather's FHE board awesome? Everything she touches turns out absolutely beautiful. She is so lucky to have a vinyl cutter, and let's her creativity go crazy with it! I do not have a cutter, but I get by okay without.

Here is my FHE board...

I created this wheel about 3 years ago, and it has worked out wonderfully for my family!! I ALWAYS use clipart for all my charts, because it helps the little ones who can't read yet. Hence the reason I created this one. It's made out of cardstock, laminated, and has magnets on the back for sticking up on the fridge or whiteboard (as is above). And it's totally easy to make!

Here's how:
First grab the right supplies, including 12x12 cardstock (can use 8 1/2x11 for the top one).

1- Draw circle with this tool (forgot what it's called). I set it at 4 inches for the top (smaller) circle. Hold the tool in place with one hand and turn paper around with other hand. *Mark where you had the center-tip of tool!

2- Now use the protractor and place the center exactly over the dot in the middle. For 6 sections, put small guide marks on "0" and "60", then the next "60" and next "0". Then rotate the tool and be sure to measure/space between the 60's and 0's.

3- Now you are ready to use the ruler and connect the dots to make your 6 even sections.

4- Cut wheel out along the outline of the circle.

5- REPEAT all steps for the larger circle, this time setting your circle-making tool at 1/2 inch bigger than the smaller one (mine was set at 4 1/2 for the bigger one).

6- Look through old Friend magazines for cute illustrations to cut out and glue on. (You might have to color-copy to resize the picture.) There is also some really cute clipart that you can find on Sugardoodle.net.

7- Now label each section by either typing/printing/cutting out/glueing on the words, or vinyl lettering, or just writing the words under each illustration. *Also write family members' names on the bigger (bottom) wheel.

8- Laminate!! Then poke holes in middle of each circle. Put together with a big brad button (mine is 25mm). (I got vinyl letters to say "FHE" on the brad button.

9- Stick some magnets on the back and you are done!! Enjoy! Pin It

{Our} FHE Board

Our FHE Board is hung in our living room to use and remind us that Monday Family Night is so important in building our relationship as a family.

The board measures 20 inch x 24 inch.
The top 6 inches = our name,
the next 9 inches = a magnet board where we put a scripture, quote or topic title that go with that weeks lesson and a picture of Jesus (which I just took a calendar and laminated a picture to rotate for every month of the year).
the last 5 inches = FHE jobs (using scrabble tiles & Shrinky Dink)
Our board works even though our little boy(who is 3 1/2) tends to rotate our little faces often. I love that in our family we have chosen to make it a priority to spend time together and build that bond that will last forever.

Kids' Specials Schedule

Another thing I like to keep up in clear view (on the fridge) is my kids' "Specials Schedule" (meaning their special classes at school like PE, music, etc). I've got that color-coded as well for each child. This helps me remember if one of the kids needs to bring back a library book, dress approprately for PE, etc. The kids often refer to it in the morning to anticipate what their special is for the day. This one is SUPER EASY to type up on the computer and post on the fridge! Pin It

Other Chore Chart Systems

In my quest to find the perfect "system" for my family, I looked at several different chore charts online including Accountable Kids and Tip Junkie. I "googled" chore and job charts and found several ideas as well. I also looked at what friends were doing with their kids and asked a lot of questions. There is a fantastic book by Merrilee Boyack called The Parenting Breakthrough that I highly recommend as a manual for raising responsible children, who will turn into independant adults. This book has made a huge impact on how I teach my children to be responsible.

Get inspired by these great ideas from some very creative homemakers. Thanks Tip Junkie!

Here is a tip I learned from some other experienced mothers: One job system will not work forever. Don't get discouraged when your system stops working the way it used to in the beginning. It's good to change it up every so often to keep things fresh and exciting for the kids. I have a friend who is the mother of 6 great kids. She has rotated between 2 or 3 different charts to keep the excitement alive! Don't worry if you have spent time and/or money on just one system. You can always bring it back when the next one gets boring! :) Pin It

More Summer Charts

Another creative homemaker, Jeni over at One Day at a Time has some really cute charts she has made for her kids for the summer. I love how she has every day of the week designated to a different type of activity. (Like Monday is Money-making day, Tuesday Travel, Wednesday Water, etc.) She also has a different child take a turn being the VIP for the day and they get to choose what activity they do that day.
She also made some cute things to go on the front door to notify neighbor kids that they are busy and not to be interrupted while getting their jobs done. And a cute nap sign for when her baby is sleeping and the door bell needs to be quiet. Great job Jeni! Pin It

Printable Summer Activity Plan!

Last May (2007) I taught a little class on summer-time fun with your family. I created a word.doc that had a bunch of info about local places (Boise, ID area) to take your family and some events that take place during the summer here. (Those of you from here, just email me and I'll send it to you!) There is so much we can do and see and teach our children during the summer! Put your creative mind to the test! There are also lots of great ideas on the FamilyFun website! At the beginning of the summer, I sit down with the kids and we make a list of everything we think would be fun to go do together. We put the list up on the wall (or fridge), so when we are having trouble thinking of something fun to do we have ideas. I go to our local community websites and find out when fun community events are scheduled. I take a red pen and write them on the calendar so I can look up there and know exactly when and where. We don't attend everything, and maybe only a few things. But it's nice to have them in clear view just in case! This year I made a chart to keep our list on, that we can record notes on and remember for next year what we thought of each activity. This will also be a nice thing to have in our family scrapbook! I am posting this chart for you to print off. (I hope it works. If not, let me know and I'll email it to you.) Pin It

Bathroom Reminders

Anyone potty-training right now? Anyone have BOYS? Well boys, girls, potty-trainees, neighbor kids, husbands- whomever uses your precious bathroom. I've got another chart for you! It's called the Bathroom Reminder chart. (It's about 5x7".) I created this one a couple years ago, and it hangs on the wall right above my toilets- eye level to the kiddos of course! We periodically go over it in family counsel meetings to make sure everyone remembers to read and heed.

This last time we discussed the bathroom rules, we also went over toilet paper- how many squares are the appropriate amount for wiping little bottoms! I passed a roll of TP around to each member of the family and had each of us count out 4 squares so we could practice. Now instead of TP strung out on the floor (sound familiar?) or plugging the toilet with too much, I pleasantly hear little voices from the bathroom "One, Two, Three, Four..." YES!! We'll give it a week or so. It's all about repetition, right? :) Pin It

My Summer System

After months of studying, asking, reading and seeing- looking for the right "system" for my family; I finally came up with something that seems like it will be quite funcional! It took some long hours, but it will be worth it. I'm trying to create more order in my home. Things can get so crazy- especially in the summer-time with everyone home. But creating order in the home makes all the difference!
Are you pulling your hair out yet, and summer has only just begun? I will come to your rescue with a custom-made system for your family- that is, as soon as I get my stuff hooked up with Executive Homemaker. Stay tuned! Click on the pictures to see better. Pin It

Family Home Evening Wheel

I've always loved those fancy vinyl-lettering Family Home Evening boards with the pegs and tags. But I knew that not all my kids would be able to read it, so about a year ago I created this FHE wheel with pictures so our little non-readers could see what their job is. It has worked so well in our home! I sell these too. They are about 10 inches in diameter, complete with 6 to 8 FHE jobs, lamenated and magnets on the back for easy hanging. Pin It
