What Are YOU Going to Be for Halloween?

Hello ladies! I know... It's been FOREVER since I've posted. But like I've said before, my family comes first. And I've been so busy with them that there has been no time for blogging, unless I just don't sleep.

So are you thinking HALLOWEEN yet? I thought about it today when I stopped into Walmart and noticed the shelves being filled with costumes, big bags of candy, and spooky things. It's that time of year again- one of my favorite seasons! Cooler air, football games, Halloween decor, zuchini squash coming out our ears... I LOVE FALL!!

Halloween is still 6 1/2 weeks away, but will be here before we know it! Do your kids know what they want to be yet? Do you have special Halloween traditions that you like to do with your family each year? Do you and/or your husband dress up for Halloween? Do you do a grown-up costume party with friends? Do you make your own costumes or buy them? Where do you find the best deals on costumes?

I am looking forward to this FRIDAY, Sept. 18. Other Mothers, my fave store for kids, teens and prego moms (in Boise, Idaho) will be having an after hours preview sale of their Halloween costumes from 5-9 pm, open to the public! It will continue through Saturday (in the empty space 2 doors down). I've heard the costumes are quite plentiful this year! But you have to hurry, because they go fast!!

Savers is another place I find good deals on costumes and/or parts and accessories to costumes. There is always Walmart and Target too (along with others), and the costume rental shops if you are really serious about a certain costume. But those places can get pretty pricey!

If you want to make your own costumes, I highly recommend YouCanMakeThis.com for their downloadable patterns and eBooks! (They have tons of princessy and tutu patterns!)

I haven't been on blogs for a long time so I'm a little out of the loop. If you have a great fall or Halloween idea, tradition, or deal-find please tell me about it and/or send me a link! I'd love that!! Pin It

My Birthday Cakes

First of all... Have you posted a comment on my Birthday Giveaway post? If not, you have until midnight tonight! I will use the random number generator to choose a winner, and that person will be getting a surprise from me in their mailbox before the end of the month!! Go here for the details. One of my other fave bloggers is also doing a giveaway with the same deadline, so while you're at it you might as well try for hers too!

The following are all the birthday cakes I've made for my kids over the last 7 years or so. I'm just missing my Elmo cake, which was my first creative cake.
I will look for the pic of my Elmo cake (not a digital photo- you know.)

I love making the balls. They're creative and quite easy to make!

How do I get my frosting on so shiny and smooth? I dip my frosting tool into a cup of water and I work it around until nice and smooth! (That takes a little time, especially if you are a perfectionist like me.)

All these (above) have been my own creation. I forgot what I did for the ladybug's head. I think it was my smallest stainless steal bowl. I used black jellybeans for the eyes and legs. I thought I was so clever coming up with the ladybug cake idea, but then I saw it on FamilyFun (I think). I'm sure all of these were thought of before me too. Goes to show that great minds think alike!

How to get that perfect, round ball shape you might wonder? If you have a Kitchen Aid mixer, it's a "piece of cake" (no pun intended)! Just be sure to grease and flour your bowl really well!! Use a whole cake mix. (It will need to bake a bit longer than normal because of how thick it is.)

The Pampered Chef Batter Bowl works too! I used that one for the football cake (below). I cut it down the middle after cooled and matched up the centers for the football shape.

I've seen people do princess doll cakes with these too. In fact I found the princess doll cake-topper (doll) at Michael's craft store for like $5. They come with blond or brunette hair. I haven't attempted one of those yet, but have seen many great ones!

Wondering how my frosting can be a nice deep color? It's all about the Wilton food dye, found at Walmart and/or craft stores in the cake decor isle. They are about $1.50 each at Walmart.

These next 3 cakes were inspired by the FamilyFun website (my fave for party ideas)...
I loved this princess crown cake. It was SO easy! I just used 2 normal-sized (medium) round cake pans, and 1 small one (the one I always used for my kids' 1st Bday cakes). I used 2 cake mixes and just made cupcakes with the extra batter. I used a $5 princess crown from Walmart for the top (which came with some matching clip-on earrings that my daughter won't wear) so I used the earrings on the sides of the cake for extra bling. I also used big round sprinkles that I found at Walmart in the cake decor section.

Last fall we had a "pretend sleepover" party for my daughter so I found this tutorial at FamilyFun.

Here is the skateboard cake I did that was so clever from FamilyFun.

These are my Great to be Eight Cookies that I posted about in January, which includes a "tute" on how to make them!

I didn't make this one. But did you know that Sam's Club will put "edible decor" (meaning photos) on your cake for no extra charge? You just hand them the photo either at drop off OR pick up! This 1/2 sheet cake from Sam's was only $16 and some change! I got to customize everything. This cake was for my son's baptism on the 4th of July (a week ago).

The rest of these are my own creations again. I couldn't think of what to do for my son's bicycle birthday party, so I tried to make a bike tire (below).

I made the Spiderman eyes out of grey card stock and laminated them with contact paper- so easy! I still have the eyes somewhere.

These other spider things were from the same party, and since my son's birthday is near Halloween they just worked out perfect! (I used plastic spider rings as decor.)

These I made for my other son's school Bday treat, which was shortly after Spiderman III came out so we did some "Venom" ones as well. To make these oval (like a face) I think I just used an empty round container and squeezed it a bit to form an oval. These were a big hit in the class!!

(Only problem was all the black tongues and lips. Oh well. The kids loved 'em!)

Whew... a lot of info for one post! FamilyFun is my fave place to go for birthday cake inspiration. I also frequent this site for ideas and have liked what I've found there too. Enjoy!

You Can Make This Too

Have you ever been to YouCanMakeThis.com? It's one of my fave places to browse online. They have the cutest eBook patterns that you can purchase online and download right then!! I have made some cute things from the YCMT eBook patterns. Here are my latest...

This is the Boutique Dress Top and Bottom from SewSensible...

(The back view) It's a halter top, so I prefer my daughter wearing it with a layer shirt underneath.

This one is actually not from one of their patterns, but I grabbed the idea from a picture on the YCMT website (the one on my left sidebar actually) and improvising a pattern I already had (from JoAnn's) for the top.

Also I cut off a pair of each of my girls' jeans for the bottoms and made some ruffles to sew onto each of them.

These turned out really cute, but took me forever! If you want to make this outfit, I highly recommend just getting it from YCMT for the step-by-step instructions!

My cousin, Sherrie is one of my fave YCMT authors! She offers a FREE headband pattern that you must go download!! (That will be my next project when I get a chance, to match the red/blue outfits I just made my girls.) I will show more of hers that I've made another time! Here are the rest of their FREEBIES!!

Birthday Party Time!

I love birthdays! Birthdays are a perfect time to boost a child's self esteem and let them know how special they are.

My daughter just had a birthday, and my son will have one in a couple of weeks. What do you do for your kids' birthdays? I've noticed a huge variety in what everyone else does. Some throw big parties with friends every year, others every other; some elaborate, others more simple. There is no right or wrong to birthdays, except that every child needs and deserves to feel like a million bucks on their birthday!!

Personally, I start giving my kids "friend" parties on their 6th birthday, then every other year from then on. They seem satisfied with that, because every year we have a family/relative party for them, so the cousins still get to come!

I am the more simple, homemade, themed birthday party kind of mom. I like to be creative and frugal. And I love to make fun cakes of the child's choosing! Soon I will post pics of the cakes [and parties] I have done.

I do not do slumber parties, nor will we let our children slumber elsewhere. Last fall I did do a "pretend sleepover" party for my daughter turning 6, and it was a lot of fun! Party guests got to where their jammies over, bring their pillow, and I had them decorate a birthday pillow case for the birthday girl (that she still sleeps on every night!). (Got the ideas from the FamilyFun website.)

I have established some little traditions for birthdays with my family over the years, like taking the birthday child on a "date night with mom and dad" on (or near) their big day, consisting of dinner (usually at Red Robin) and whatever they choose to do afterward. We usually end our date with a trip to Walmart or Build-a-Bear or somewhere they can pick out something special from mom and dad.

The most important things I make sure to do on birthdays are:
1. Decorate the house! The night before, after kids go down I put up the Happy Birthday banner, the birthday wreath on the front door, the birthday table cloth and special chair cover (equiped with a pocket on the back for love letters and cards from family members), the "You are Special" red charger plate, and the picture frame centerpeice with the birthday child's picture in it. (Dollar store banner, fabric store, some homemade stuff)
2. The birthday pillowcase that covers the birthday child's pillow for the week of their birthday. (Homemade. Birthday fabric found at Joann's)
3. The "I'm the Birthday Girl/Boy" badge that the special child gets to wear to let everyone know it's their day. (Found at Walmart or Zurchers for cheap!)
4. The birthday questionaire which the child (or mom for the little ones) fills out and goes in the child's special binder.

...I know, a lot of work, but a lot of fun! (I got lots of these ideas several years ago from Carleen Tanner's parenting class on "Traditions" as well as from my own childhood, etc.) Pin It

Xpressions Dance Academy

I'm really excited about a dance studio I recently learned about! It's called Xpressions Dance Academy, located in Nampa off the Franklin Rd. exit. I met the "mom-prunuer" owner last week, who is my neighbor Alexis. She is such a darling mom of 3 with an incredible passion for dance. I hear she is also an extremely talented dancer who has been dancing her whole life. Anyway, Xpressions is run by Alexis and her mother (whom I also met last week)- two very neat ladies!

What I am really excited about are her summer dance camps, like the "Princess Camp" for little girls between ages 3-6, and also "Hannah Camp" (you know- Hannah Montana) for age 7-9. Round one of Princess camp was this week, but she will be doing another one in July! The Hannah camp is next week. I think she is still taking sign-ups, so hurry on over to check it out! Pin It

Neat Video!

"What you want to do, and what you can do, is limited only by what you can dream."
-Mike Melville

My husband got this YouTube video today in an email from a friend. He had me come in and watch it. SO profound, and it brought tears to my eyes. I just had to share it on my blog.
Here's the explaination that came with it:

"This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20 year old. The contest was titled "u @ 50", by the AARP. This video won second place.
When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause. So simple and yet so brilliant. Take a minute and watch." Pin It

My Town- Summer Fun Activities

Strawberry Banana Trifle- Mmmm!

Wanna show up to your next BBQ with the most delightful dessert? Try this super easy, must-have recipe. I got it years ago at a recipe exchange and have loved bringing it to BBQ's ever since. I usually have copies of the recipe with me just in case someone asks for it. (And they usually do!) I love trifles, because they are beautiful, easy, perfect for this time of year; and usually a big hit at any BBQ or picnic! Trifle bowls are also quite inexpensive. I got mine at Walmart several years ago for about 6 or 7 bucks! Have a fab weekend!!

Straberry Banana Trifle

5 oz box instant vanilla pudding
3 c cold milk
9" angel food cake (cut in chunks)
4 bananas (sliced)
16 oz fresh strawberries (sliced or cut big)
12 oz whipped topping (thawed)

Mix instant pudding and milk. In trifle, layer half of each: cake chunks, pudding, bananas, strawberries and whipped topping. Repeat layers. Serve fresh!

Teacher Thank You/Appreciation Gift Ideas

I am so grateful for my kids' teachers! It was recently Teacher Appreciation Week at school. That was around the time I went out of town on my "sisters trip" to Kansas; so I was crazy busy leaving, and catching up when I got home. So my teacher gifts were a little late, but better late than never eh? Here is one of the teacher gifts I did this year...

This one was really simple- Just type a quick saying like, "There's no 'Sub'stitute for a teacher like you" and print it on cardstock, 2 per page so it will fold into cards. Grab a gift card from your favorite sub shop and stick it on with mini glue dots. Write a nice note of appreciation inside to make it even more special, and throw it in a celliphane tied with ribbon. Walla! A gift any teacher would love and appreciate! (Got the idea from SkiptoMyLou.)

If your life is as crazy as mine and you missed "Teacher Appreciation Week", don't worry! You still have a week or two to throw something special together for an End-of-the-Year thank you gift. Here's what I did last year. I got the idea from EverythingPink, via TipJunkie.

Here are some other ideas via TipJunkie. Pin It

Music Lessons- "Let's Play Music!"

Danicia with Let's Play Music! teaches an exciting, new music curriculum which teaches advanced musical skills to young children using age-appropriate methods. Music educators have long taught that the young child learns best thought play, experience and discovery. Let’s Play Music! uses play as the medium through which difficult concepts and skills are learned.

This exciting curriculum will lead your child from very basic music introduction using singing, and rudimentary instruments through a three year program. By graduation time, students will be playing piano at an intermediate level, transposing music, composing their own music, sight-reading music, and prepared to excel in any further piano instruction.

Here is a special offer from Danicia, herself!! {{so excited!}}
Because this is such a new and innovative curriculum, I am anxious to give you and your child (age 4-8)* an inside look into what you can expect from each and every class period. I would like to invite you to attend a special sneak preview Sample Class, FREE! There you can observe your child participate in class and ask any questions you may have. I am positive that your experience will be enlightening, refreshing and FUN! Please visit our website and watch the online video for lots of great information!

I will begin enrolling for the 2009-2010 session on APRIL 13. Please call me at 968-0058 or e-mail at dave_danicia@yahoo.com to register for a Sample Class and discover the fascinating world of Let’s Play Music!

My Town- More Lessons

I have 3 piano teachers to shout about!

*Heidi P. in north Meridian is in the process of scheduling for summer and starting on next fall.

As of April 30, she had at least 3 openings during the summer months - June, July & August. She will offer 8 lessons during those months, including 3 group lessons. Those 3 openings will carry into my Fall / Winter / Spring Quarters.

Heidi offers 45 minute private lessons, and 90+ minute group lessons for $65 dollars per student per month.

Give her a call at 846-9496 for more info.

*Bethany C. in west Meridian (north of Cherry Lane between Ten Mile and Black Cat) has taught kind of sporadically for the last 7 years. She is taking students ages 6 and up starting now.
She charges $10 per lesson, which usually ends up at $40 a month.

She uses the Faber Piano Adventures books, but if someone already has other books she'd be happy to use those.

Bethany's contact number is 286-9595.
(I am signing up my 2 oldest with Bethany for the fall because she lives nice and close to me.)

*Danicia with Let's Play Music... More info to come!!

*Macie S. in west Boise does cheer/tumbling classes during the summer months! She is also taking sign-ups for the fall dance session. Check out her website for more info.

(This is where I take my 4 year old for dance, because it's a laid-back atmosphere, in a conveniant location, and SO much less expensive than the typical dance studio. $25/month! Can't beat that!)

*Mindy in Nampa is doing her Kids Cooking Camps again this summer. Go check out her blog for more info and contact numbers! (Mindy's Pie Pantry pies are truly the best I have ever tasted!)

My-Town Swim Lessons- Angie

My boys took their first swim lessons from the neatest people, whom we've known for many years. Angie's Sharks and Minnows swim school is located in West Boise (near Centenial High School) and they are fabulous!! It's a backyard, heated pool and they have been teaching swim lessons for 22 years now! It's being run by Angie Hobson and her mom, Mary Gleason. Angie is the head instructor and is a SAHM of 4 kids. She has Kortney Belnap, a BYU college student that teaches with her. I love the way they teach children how to swim! My boys had Gina (Angie's younger sister) as their instructor a few years ago. They are all great with kids and really know how to make it fun and non-intimidating, which is so nice!! Pin It

I'm Still Alive

How's everyone? I have not posted in a long time it seems... And I am totally okay with it. Whew! I've had some catching up to do in other areas of my life, and I'm still not caught up. (Will I ever be??) Probably not, but I'm okay with that too I guess.

I've decided that I cannot do it all, and that it's OKAY! I've decided that my time is precious and is best spent with the ones I love the most. I just cannot figure out how some women can do couponing and blog about it too. Do they just not sleep? Do they have superhuman powers? I just can't seem to figure it out... And I'm not even going to try.

My most fave [me-time] hobbies/interests right now:
-Blogging
-Couponing
-The Biggest Loser (the only show I never miss every week)

My most important responsibilities/needs right now:
-My husband and children
-My primary calling at church
-My home
-My health (diet/exercise/sleep)

Hours in a day for all of it: Never enough!!

Something's gotta give!!
Right now I am raising a family and keeping a strong marriage. That is number 1.
I am the primary president in my ward. That is number 1 1/2.
A clean and orderly home... Number 1 3/4.
My kids mom, my husband's girlfriend, ME, myself, and I... 2.

Well, looks like the other stuff is going to have to come last. That's why I've not posted in a while. And I am not going to worry about it anymore. I am hearby releasing myself from regular posting on The Creative Homemaker.

I have a long list of things I still want to post about including Ideas, "Tutes", My Town shout-outs, and more. I've promised a weekly "blogger of the week", and a "keeping it real" series. It's all there on my white-board and all in my head! But it can't be on my priority list, so... check back again for more sporatic posts. XOXO Pin It

Sugardoodle... Conference... Attention LDS Moms!

I have put some of my creations on Sugardoodle.net over the last few months. I still have several more to send, but haven't had a chance yet. This last Sunday (3/26) I taught sharing time in primary about the counsel in heaven and the plan of salvation, and I tied it in with general conference, and how God gave us prophets as part of His plan to help us know how to return to Him someday. I made this plan of salvation visual aid and also cut out pictures of the scriptures, the Savior, Joseph Smith's first vision, temple, and President Monson speaking at gen. conf. from past Ensigns/Friends. When I did the lesson, we put those pictures up around the 'earth' when I tied in gen. conf.

Also, speaking of Sugardoodle.net (my most fave website!!) and general conference, there are a ton of great General Conference ideas and packets to chose from there!!

I'll let you know when I get more of my creations sent. I'll give you links to my other stuff when I get a chance.

BTW, we are heading to SLC in about an hour for the weekend. We don't make it over to UT too often, even though it's only 5 hours away. You UT gals... Is there anywhere I should stop? Distribution and Ikea are on my list. But I am also in need of a wheat grinder still!! I am leaning toward the Wondermill. I'm thinking UT might be the place to find the best deal. ??? Help?

Love you ladies!! Have a FAB conference weekend!! XOXO Pin It
