I thought about buying these but since, when I sew, I like my top & bottom threads to match I needed a way to store my bobbins with the spools. This wall rack will hold 128 spools. Total dimension 31 1/2" x 23 1/2".
I cut some wood "shelves"(1x4's cut in 1/2 length wise= about 1 5/8" wide by 30" long) & hammered in some nails on the front side(1 3/4" apart) for the bobbins. I found this great idea to secure the end of the thread to the bobbin. Its just clear plastic tubing I cut to fit the bobbins(found at Home Depot). I added thin molding to the front to hide the seam. The backing is a piece of beadboard.
Its so nice to be able to find what color I'm looking for. Now I just need to fill it up.

Oh! It looks so great and colorful!

ReplyDeleteTotally making this! Thanks!!

I love this!! What a fantastic idea! That's my biggest problem when it comes to keeping my small sewing area clean--the thread. Thanks for sharing! I posted about your great idea on our sewing blog:

Love it! Great idea with the bobbins. I would love to make something like this for mine because one year olds love playing with them lol.

This is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteWhat is that plastic piece you used on the bobbins to hold in the thread. I love this and am going to have to copy this too!
ReplyDeletejmvander2-the thing on the bobbin is clear plastic tubing found at Home Depot. I cut it to fit the bobbin.
ReplyDeletelove it! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi, love your blog, I'm new at this and just in the process of setting up mine :)
ReplyDeleteWould love to have a go making this, but I'm so short of space I couldnt even put this on the wall lol
Look forward to reading your future posts xx
I love this and am making it for my mom's sewing room. Stat. She is limited on space so one more thing that can be out of a box on the shelf and displayed neatly and beautifully is a plus. Was wondering if you could give a few more details on construction? What is the width and height, does it have a back, it looks like maybe the outside railing has a lip, is this a different type of piece than the 1x4 split in half? Thanks for any tips you can give!! :)
ReplyDeletei ADORE this! my own thread holder is such a mess with threads hanging every which way and the bobbing guessing game is always fun! I have to make one of these now;) Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteWow, love this. I need about 4 of them, LOL.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and great job!
ReplyDeleteI am going to home depot right now and making myself one!!! You are so smart!!!
ReplyDeleteJust found this on Pinterest and it is an awesome and inspiring idea! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThat Rubber tubing for the bobbins was a stroke of pure genius going to check garage right now for some...thanks Cindy
ReplyDeleteI'm in the process of designing and setting up my own sewing/craft room so this is a great idea and has now been pinned on my inspiration board so thanks for sharing. I'm now a follower :) x

That is just wonderful!! Thank you for sharing your idea - I dream of a world where I have many bobbins with matching threads... I think I'll try and make one of these!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this! I've just gotten back into sewing and have been struggling to find an efficient way to store the thread and bobbins together. This is perfect! If I couldn't find a way to do this, I wanted to come up with some sort of "clip" that would cover the bobbin that I could label to at least ID which one goes with which spool. Bingo! You have that, too!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this nifty thread solution. I've been wanting to organize my threads for years!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!
I have been trying to figure out something for my paints! I will just tweak the heighth a bit and this will work great!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Love this - I think I'll make my husband finally use some of the tools he was begging for and he can make one for me. :-) Great creative out of the box thinking!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this idea. The beauty of building your own is that you can make it to fit your space. My space is tall and skinny, so I built mine to fit exactly, well almost. I love having my thread and bobbins where I can see them. Visit stonesoup55.blogspot.com to see mine. Thanks again for the idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea...Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOh Wow!!! this is just what I am looking for. I also love the icea about the bobbin holders and the rubber tubing to keep the bobbins from unraveling. I am going to get on this right away or get someone else on it. I need this badly. TFS Great Idea. You Rock.
ReplyDeleteI just came up with a great idea to save a couple of $'s. I will use an old frame for the initial cabinet and go from there.
ReplyDeleteTakk for god ide, det er ikke enkelt å finne lagringsplass som blir god og oversiktlig! Takk også for tips til spolen:) Hilsen Trine in Norway
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea...saw it on Karen's Sew Many Ways!
ReplyDeleteI had my Fella make one after seeing yours...Thank you so much for sharing it
ReplyDeleteI saw this link at Sew many ways, love the idea. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe tubing is a great idea for bobbins! I hate those ends going all over.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great idea. I really like how it has a place to put the matching bobbin thread. I am thinking you could just make a couple of shelves a little bigger for the cone threads.
ReplyDeleteI totally used this as inspiration for my thread storage, thank you!
ReplyDeletehttp://bettybubsdesign.blogspot.com.au/2012/12/operation-organisation-how-to-make.html
Great idea. Looks like it would hold a lot more spools than the peg style you can buy at the store. My mom has the peg style. She puts the bobbins on the peg then drops the spool on the peg on top of the bobbin to keep them together
ReplyDeleteThis is great! I need to copy this!!
ReplyDeleteDo you sell these? I'm so not handy, but it is exactly what I'm looking for.
ReplyDeleteAmanda,
DeleteIf I were to make one, I would charge $50 + shipping. Due to the bad weather around here(and my wood shop is outside), it wouldn't be able to be shipped out til April. Let me know.
Thanks.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI mentioned your beautiful wooden thread holder on my blog kikoipatterns.blogspot.com/ and on my facebook page
Have a nice day!
I love this idea! I've been looking for something where both the thread and bobbin thread can be put together. Also, love the idea of using the tubing hold the loose ends of the bobbin thread! Awesome! My husband is looking into making it. THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteKathy K.
Love this idea and I'm going to make it. Home Depot here I come!
ReplyDeleteMy bobbins are plastic so I'll need the nails but I saw where someone put their metal bobbins on a magnetic strip!
Don't have a web site to post your link on but I have a voice. Rest assured I will be promoting this site wherever I can. It's so practical, I love it. Thank you
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. and I love it because the rack is flat and love especially the rubber tube idea. Thanks so much for sharing
ReplyDeleteLove the whole idea. Every time I get a clever idea, I no sooner say it out loud and I find it on the store shelves. Very clever!
ReplyDeleteI love it. Just might have to make one this weekend. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSandy
Thank you for leaving this up! My Beloved Husband made one for me today - smaller, to fit the space above my sewing area, but just right for me. He even drilled for 3/16" pegs instead of making me hammer in nails. I've posted a link to here on my Facebook when I bragged about him.
ReplyDeleteLove Love and did I mention Love this! Thank you for the awesome idea. I just started sewing a couple months ago so I wanted a smaller version with rows for standard spools and for serger thread. I couldn't find anyone to accommodate my "want it now" attitude so I did it myself. I'm very proud of my creating and it looks great! My only regret is that I didn't make it a little bigger.
ReplyDeleteI finally hung mine last night with my husband's help. Thanks for the inspiration. I've kept this post bookmarked so I could hop back over here to refer to it. My only problem is that my thread cones have somehow multiplied and I need to build another cabinet. Or use them up quickly. I'm going to try keeping the bobbins with the cones using a golf tee, but if that doesn't work, I'll use nails as you have done.
ReplyDeleteI used your idea but adapted it to match my needs as I have several different models I needed different bobbin to keep track of I can't find a way to post my pics for you to see... :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration
This is great!! Love all these ideas! Thanks for sharing!! bridal fabrics
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is brillient. I have been looking for a way to store my thread and bobbins without the tangle. Love this!

ReplyDeleteSuper, super idea and tutorial. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSo clever; especially the bobbin idea. In the country, where I live, there is dust accumulation everywhere. I will need to find a way to make some plastic cover front for it. But I really love it. Have stray pieces of wood just waiting. Thanks lots.
ReplyDeleteSo clever and perfect! I would (really!) love one of these for my Mom. Do you sell them? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCan you please give a few more instructions. I'm handy at building things but please I need to know a bit more to make it.
ReplyDeleteFor the lady who needs a cover, clear vinyl from the Wal Mart or fabric store cut to cover will help keep dust out. You can put Velcro on the sides to close the vinyl over the thread so it will keep the dust out.
