Sore Throat Home Remedy

I wanted to share this awesome home remedy with you, since it's the beginning of that time of year (flu season) again... Last Wednesday morning I woke up with a terrible sore throat and swollen tonsils. It hurt to eat, drink, talk, or even breathe! I've always been very prone to strep, so I wanted to fight this any way I could.

So my sister told me about a home remedy she recently heard about, that worked for her when she had strep throat a few weeks ago. I am SO grateful she told me about this!!!!...

It's a mixture of Listerine and Hydrogen Peroxide. All you do is pour some Listerine into the cup, mix in a little peroxide, and GARGLE!

I guess you can also just get the Listerine Whitening kind (which already has peroxide in it) but I already had the regular Listerine, so I just mixed it myself.

Anyway, I tried this remedy and it TOTALLY WORKS!! I started gargling with this solution several times a day, especially after every meal and before bed. Within 36 hours my sore throat was completely GONE! (I continued to gargle after I felt better, just not as often. I just want to be sure all the bacteria is gone- as if I were taking anitbiotics.) I feel great!

It was really cool, because I could hear and feel the peroxide sizzling on the painful parts and just killing bacteria with every crackle.
The best part though? All the MONEY [and time] I SAVED by not going to the doctor or buying a prescription!!

  2. I have tried watered down H. Peroxide but that tastes horrible and doesn't seem to work very fast or completely. I must ask, wasn't your treatment PAINFUL, since your throat was so sore? I think Listerene stings even without a sore throat. Good luck, stay well.

  3. PS Don't get me wrong, I will try your remedy since I get Strep easily too. Thanks a bunch!!

  4. And you didn't have to take any antibiotics which is a plus! I've also heard gargling with warm salt water relieves the pain.
Great home remedy! I will remember this!

  5. Nope... no antibiotics!! Isn't that awesome? And when my sister did this remedy to cure her strep throat a couple weeks ago, she used the warm salt water as well to help soothe the pain. I just used DayQuil and Nighquil.

  6. K- I know the peroxide tastes gross, but don't water it down. I WILL work, I promise. I used to get sores on my tongue whenever I ate certain kinds of nuts, growing up. My mom would have me swish with strait hydro. peroxide right before bed and in the morning the sores would be gone, or almost gone, and the pain would also be gone. It ALWAYS worked. Also, I was scared to try this remedy too because, YES the Listerine hurts like heck even in the mouth; but really it wasn't bad when I gargled it. I don't think it hurt any worse.

  7. This sounds like a good idea to try! Did you use equal parts of peroxide and Listerine?

  8. Laurel- I didn't measure how much Listerine or peroxide I put in, but I'll bet I mixed in equal parts; (or maybe more like 2 parts Listerine to 1 part Peroxide, or 3/4 Listerine to 1/4 peroxide). If I didn't "taste" the peroxide, then I mixed more in so I knew i had plenty of it too. I'm sorry... I am a "quicky" kind of gal, so I often just throw things together "guestimating" without measuring. :o)

  9. Thanks Angela. I appreciate the extra info. Maybe the Listerene kind of numbed everything? Glad to hear how it worked for you. I'm trying it the next time something hits me. Thanks again. Take Care.

  10. Angela,
I'm not a measure kind of gal either, I just guess. But I like to have a rough idea what to guess at!! Thanks again for the info. I will be trying this next time I or someone in my family has a tickle in the throat!

  11. Yep, both my husband and i have done this and it TOTALLY works. I've also done the hot salt water gargle with good results. I HATE going to the doctor, so this is awesome.

  12. You know... I DO think it's about a 50/50 mixture of Listerine and Peroxide. I mixed some last night to see, and yep... about 1 to 1.

  13. My mother SWEARS by Listerine. She gets really bad bronchitis several times a year and started gargling with it when she felt a tingle, she hasn't gotten sick for several months now. She also swears by gargling with baking soda and one full strength asprain in hot water.... NASTY but it really works. I did both of these three times today when I woke up with a sore throat and it's nearly gone! Thanks for sharing!

  14. Should I feel a dramatic difference right away or will it just gradualy get better?

  15. While your remedy may relieve the symptoms, the Strep bacteria will remain in your body. Untreated strep can lead to Rheumatic fever, ear infections, meningitis, pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome...so if you truly believe you have Strepm antibiotics are the way to go. Especially in children to prevent these complications. Plus most people feel significantly better after one or two doses of antibiotics which is also quicker relief than your claim for your remedy.

  16. MichelleL NOT TRUE!

Dr. Heit and other doctors agree too! "The vast majority of streptococcal throat infections will go away on their own even without treatment, and the chance of rheumatic fever or meningitis is extremely small even if you don't go to the doctor. The main reason to use antibiotics is to prevent these very rare but serious complications; not to treat the throat symptoms. The majority of sore throats never get seen by a doctor, yet hardly any of these untreated patients develop complications"

  17. Any ideas for a 20 month old who is at the point where we are going to have surgery soon do to strep throat 4 times in 6 months? We would like to delay it as long as we can.

  18. Some home made Sore Throat Remedies:
Put 1 tablespoon in glass of lukewarm water and do gargle, at-least 4-5 times a day.
You can also have 1 spoon of honey mix with ginger juice. but it should be taken once a day because its very strong.
Instead of water you can do the gargling with beta-dine or even vodka. they are best in killing bacteria.
Hot lemonade mix with honey relieves the pain quickly.

  19. Angela, I really want to thank you for this remedy! I have had a sore throat for the past few days, and I am also very prone to strep. Nothing has been working, and I'm reluctant to go to the doctor for a mere sore throat. Your listerine/peroxide solution is a total winner!! The second I started gargling with it I could feel it working. My throat is much better now. I will use this as part of my arsenal in fighting sore throats! Thanks again!
