I thought about buying these but since, when I sew, I like my top & bottom threads to match I needed a way to store my bobbins with the spools. This wall rack will hold 128 spools. Total dimension 31 1/2" x 23 1/2".
I cut some wood "shelves"(1x4's cut in 1/2 length wise= about 1 5/8" wide by 30" long) & hammered in some nails on the front side(1 3/4" apart) for the bobbins. I found this great idea to secure the end of the thread to the bobbin. Its just clear plastic tubing I cut to fit the bobbins(found at Home Depot). I added thin molding to the front to hide the seam. The backing is a piece of beadboard.
Its so nice to be able to find what color I'm looking for. Now I just need to fill it up.

I love this and am making it for my mom's sewing room. Stat. She is limited on space so one more thing that can be out of a box on the shelf and displayed neatly and beautifully is a plus. What is the width and height, does it have a back, it looks like maybe the outside railing has a lip, is this a different type of piece than the 1x4 split in half? If I couldn't find a way to do this, I wanted to come up with some sort of "clip" that would cover the bobbin that I could label to at least ID which one goes with which spool. Bingo! Great idea. Looks like it would hold a lot more spools than the peg style you can buy at the store. My mom has the peg style. She puts the bobbins on the peg then drops the spool on the peg on top of the bobbin to keep them together

I just started sewing a couple months ago so I wanted a smaller version with rows for standard spools and for serger thread. I couldn't find anyone to accommodate my "want it now" attitude so I did it myself. I'm very proud of my creating and it looks great! My only regret is that I didn't make it a little bigger.

My only problem is that my thread cones have somehow multiplied and I need to build another cabinet. Or use them up quickly. I'm going to try keeping the bobbins with the cones using a golf tee, but if that doesn't work, I'll use nails as you have done.

ReplyDeleteFor the lady who needs a cover, clear vinyl from the Wal Mart or fabric store cut to cover will help keep dust out. You can put Velcro on the sides to close the vinyl over the thread so it will keep the dust out.

ReplyDeleteTerrific job! A hint for you is to put a small stainless steel wood screw (phillips head, of course) in the clear vinyl bobbin-stays. Makes it easier to get them off. I've been making them for years now. I say making them, as every time a friend sees them, she gets to leave with a handful ;->. I bet you do the same thing.
