Valentine Countdown {#1}

Our kids love Countdowns.

When I found this inspiration & decided to make my own version, I was so excited to make it(and blog it).

With some leftover wood I had, I started with a board that measures 7 "x 11"x 1 1/2". I drilled 14 holes using a 1" wood boring bit. The washer helped as a guide for the hole placement.

I used a dremel to carve the numbers using the vinyl negative.

I painted the wood red then pink. After it was dry, I sanded the whole piece.

I had to paint the numbers brown (the carved #'s didn't work as well as they did in my head). Then on the sticker I added dimension with Glossy Accents.

If you don't want to see the drilled holes you could punch out 1" circles and attach them with glue dots. [I did brown paper for the chocolates that will go there]

These are the ones I did for the kids with vinyl #'s. The pink ones are for the girls and the red one is for our little man. You can buy the vinyl numbers here.

Fill the holes with Hershey kisses/hugs candies.

They get to eat a candy Kiss/Hug as they Countdown the days!

Computer Subway Art

My brilliant daughter (who is in 7th grade) came home with this computer site idea from her teacher. It was so fun I had to do some playing around for Valentine's Day.

I love the look of Subway Art.
On this site the amount of times you write the word will determine the size of the word. For example: I wrote "love" 7x and "candy" 2x. After you write the words you can go in and change the font and color.

So FUN with all the possibilities!! Now I just have to frame it.

Amazing "Fitspiration"

I found an amazing blog that I'd like to share... A woman named Jen lost over 100 pounds and looks incredible! Look at this...

I still need to lose lots of weight, and every time I try, I fail after about 2 weeks. Why can't I stay the course? Why is it so hard to eat healthy and exercise every day? Does it have to be so overwhelming?

I feel totally inspired by Jen and her weight-loss journey. I want to share her link for anyone that is struggling with their weight and/or health. Jen inspires me so much! I have also found some inspiring quotes to share with you that I found on Pinterest. I am going to print a few of them to display around my house to inspire me. Here are a few of my faves...

Bridal Shower for Rachel

My niece is getting married next month so her Bridal Shower was today.
Oh, how sweet it is to be reminded of young Love.

I made this "Towel Girl" inspired from here but the tutorial to put it together is here.

The hair piece in the Towel Girl is actually for Rachel to wear.

The Towel Girl's dress are towels from the Dollar store that I added some strips of ribbon to one and a fabric "C" to the other.

To make the flower on the top towel, I cut a strip of fabric from a Tshirt. Start winding then twist then wind and so on.

Sew the flower onto the towel in a circular stitching pattern. Attach some beads in the middle.

"It's All Good" is their menu board for meals. I painted their initials in the corner to personalize it.

While Rachel opened gifts we played Bridal Shower Bingo. It was a fun way to be involved in the gift opening.

{Homemade} Hot Chocolate

Its been so cold lately-snow,rain,windy. This is the perfect weather for Hot Chocolate!

This is the hot chocolate I used to buy. . .

Now that I found this homemade recipe why go back. {My scoop is a great measurement- I took it from my protein powder shake container}. I was able to fit most of the mix in a #10 metal can.
My version of the Recipe:
3 1/4 cup regular dry milk powder
3 1/4 cup chocolate dry milk powder
1 (12 oz.) container Ovaltine Rich Chocolate powder
[much healthier than Nesquik]
1 1/2 cups powdered non-dairy creamer
2 (3.9 oz.) boxes of chocolate pudding mix
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp. salt (adds flavors together)

Mix together. To make Hot Chocolate: add 5 Tbl. mix to 1 cup of hot water. Store remainder in an air tight container. Best if used within 6 months.

Another Hot Chocolate Favorite(found with the Mexican supplies)

Some of our Favorite Add-ins: Syrups{Vanilla, Pumpkin Pie, Toasted Marshmallow,Raspberry, EggNog}. Just add 1 tsp.

Danish Pancakes

Our kids LOVE these Danish Aebleskivers(aka danish puffy fried cakes). I picked up this pan awhile back in a cooking store(but you could buy them here) and it has added much pleasure to our morning breakfasts'.

After making the batter(recipe at the end of post), coat the pan with nonstick spray then pour into each cup of the pan. Fill only half full. If there's too much it will be doughy in the middle. Keep your pan at a lower tempature to cook.

Wait until it bubbles on the top, then you can flip it over.

Flip over the "aebleskiver" with a skewer stick(I found this out to be the best tool).

Our kids dip them in different syrups and jam. You could also sprinkle them with powered sugar.

Recipe:
2 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
2 cups buttermilk or whole milk
3 eggs separated
Combine the flour, salt and soda. Add milk and egg yolks. Beat egg whites until light and fluffy. Gently fold egg into the batter. Grease each cup(i do it every time so they don't stick) with spray vegetable oil. Cook until golden brown on each side.

Our oldest daughter turned 13 last month. An age full of Emotions.
So to celebrate this special year she was a given a Teenage Advice Book and she got to Decorate Her Room. To say she was excited is an understatement.

My Computer {Desk}

I love my Computer Desk.

I got it a few years back and just added my personal touch to it.

I took an inexpensive computer table. I cut a piece of sanded plywood for the top and bought scrapbook paper for the shelves. [The shelves have needed some patchin' up].

Take the Mod Podge Glue and brush on a good layer to desk surface.

Lay the scrapbook paper down and brush on another good layer.

When it is dry use an exacto knife to cut off the excess.

Knitted Kitchen Hot Pad

My second daughter was practicing with her loom and knitted this Hot Pad.
I wanted to add some strength to it so I sewed a piece of fabric to the back.

Cut a piece of fabric an inch bigger than the knitted square.

Fold over the fabric edge and pin the knit piece to the fabric.

I sewed around the edges 3 times to make sure it will stay together.

All sewn together.

We have had a towel problem lately.
Our 2 older daughters think they need to use a clean towel everyday after they shower. So this is what it looks like at the end of each week-

The solution that came to mind. . .
They each picked out their own colored towels. At the end of the week they wash [the 3 towels] for the next week.

I made this card to post on the closet door as a reminder.

Medicine Organizer

Since this month I'm dedicating time to organize more around the house. . .
I knew this closet(which holds meds/cleaning supplies/extra toiletries) needed it!

I found this system at Walmart to hang on the door for all the medicines. I was so excited and then realized it didn't fit on my door.

So I found this shower organizer(at BedBath&Beyond) to hang from the door. Since it didn't have much space I had to limit the medicines to the mostly used ones.

I had to cut a piece of wood for both shelves so the medicines don't fall through the wire shelving. To the top of the unfinished wood I added a piece of contact paper-just in case any meds spill.

Containing the {Glitter}

I was emptying some spice containers & before I threw them away, I realized they would make perfect GLITTER containers. Recycling is Great.

I used these 1/2 size spice containers.

I covered the outside with scrapbook paper of what color glitter it will hold (I love the shaker holes in the lid).

I sprayed painted the lids black. I think they look a little bit better. What'd ya think?

Calendar Magnet Pictures

I got a Calendar last year so I could use the pictures-they are so beautiful. I cut the calendar apart and laminated each one.

On the back I put magnets, the month & the title of the picture.

We hang them here in our living room on our FHE board.

I love the constant reminder to be like our Savior.

I found these CUTE kitchen towels at Walmart (only $0.49)1/2 off this week. I knew they would be great as Pillows.

Turn both towels right sides together and sew them up. Leave a hole for stuffing filler.

Grandma's {Gift}

This year for Christmas, this is what we gave my mom as a Gift.

Whenever our kids leave her house they always ask for candy(or a pickle), so she can always have some on hand, I made this for her.

I spray painted the lid and the base(a candlestick holder- $0.50 @ second hand store). then used E6000 glue to glue the base onto the bottom of the glass container.

This year I stitched a letter on a kitchen towel. Then I wrapped 2 of my homemade jams & a gift certificate inside.

Holly n' Berries Brooch

Here's my Christmas Brooch: Holly Leaves with some "Berries".

I found the leaves at the Dollar store(Dollar Tree).

My not so pretty back. Hot glue everything onto a wooden disc. I ended up adding more leaves(& cutting some off) so that's why there is some next to the pin backing.

I used the same color rhinestone as the fabric so it blends in well. To make the rosettes go here.

{Santa} Gift Can

Glittered Ornament Ball

My sister needed an ornament for her Christmas party so I made this one.

Take an ornament ball and add any sort of sticker letters to spell a word.

Put tacky glue or "glossy accents" dimensional glue to the sticker top to adhere the glitter.

Finish the other letters.

[we did a little something different for her teachers since she has 7]

Here's what I did:
Got a frame from the second hand store ($0.75)and covered it with fabric.
Bought some Walmart brand crayons and hot glued them to the fabric.
Used my heat gun to melt the crayons. Stand picture up and use heat gun in a downward position.

Then added ribbon for hanging and their name in vinyl to personalize it.

Things I think I learned to do different the next time:

1-Use "CRAYOLA" crayons

2-Use real canvas fabric or save up to buy the actual canvas

Festive French Toast

I was making French Toast this morning and went to grab for the milk and saw the Egg Nog. I decided to try something new so I poured it in with the eggs.

Christmas Present Solution

I don't put any presents under the Christmas tree since I still have little ones that might want a "sneak peek". I have devised a plan that works for us.

Our kids think these presents are part of my Christmas Decor BUT actually they are their Christmas Presents. They sit above the kitchen cabinets to decorate the Kitchen through the month of December and I then pull them down Christmas Eve night.
If its anything bigger than what I can fit up there I put a note in a small box and make them Scavenger Hunt for it. It makes Christmas morning so fun!

Sweet Treats for Santa

Tie a Perfect Bow

Have you ever had trouble getting your bows to look just so? Well, there is a strategy to tying a perfect bow. Here's how I tie mine...

I always start it out with the right side crossing over the left, so that I end up looping it over and down behind with my right hand.

Then I make a loop by folding the right strand under itself (with the excess ribbon hanging down from thumb).

Now I lay the top/left ribbon over the other loop and tuck it up through the right side. *TIP- The key is to make sure the ribbon stays as FLAT as possible the whole time.

Then I pull the loops tight to finish the bow.

Don't forget to fluff the loops of the wider ribbons to make them look full and finished!

You can also form a perfect bow without tying it around something. Just cut a piece of ribbon, longer than you need but not too much to waist.

Being conscience of where the middle of the ribbon is, I make a flat loop (with one half of the ribbon) around the back of my right finger, leaving the long part hanging behind. Then I hold it in place with my thumb and index finger.

With my left hand, I bring the long part up (from behind), up and over my fingers and other loop, to the front.

Then I tuck it up under the right one (just like I mentioned above) and finish it off.

I'm sure to pull nice and tight, and always have to play with it a little bit to make sure the loops are even. Then I trim off excess ribbon at the ends to give it a uniform, finished look.

*TIP- Depending on the size (width) of the ribbon I'm using, it will determine how big or small to make the bow. (They always look best if the sizes coordinate.)

Truffle Turkeys

I'm finally done with these Truffle Turkeys-they took a little longer than I thought but they are soo cute! I'm putting these on the plates as a decoration but it also serves as a party favor.

Base: Cut a piece of cardstock 2 1/2"x4". Fold in half.

Feet: Use the flower punch and cut according to the picture.

Feathers: Fold a coffee filter in 1/2 then in 3rds. Ink the outer edges with the brown ink pad.

Staple the feathers on and glue "dot"(scrapbooking item) the feet.

Body: I used #8 as my stencil. When I cut it out I cut the bottom half a little bigger.

Ink around the body edge. Draw a face[this is all the time I could spare].

Make the truffle balls. I rolled mine in almonds to cut down the super sweet taste. Put the Truffle candy in clear plastic bags.

Glue "dot" it all together. You could add some raffia if so desire.

You can never go wrong with Chocolate!

ICE Container

I LOVE LOVE Sonic Ice. I will go there just to get a large ice water with extra ice when I out & about. I thought Thanksgiving would be a perfect time to bring some in.
Here is my Sonic Ice Container:

I used my stencil & permanent marker to "pretty it up".

Fill up with Sonic Ice(only $1.58 a bag). I got the clear plastic scoops at the Dollar Tree Dollar store in the wedding section.

Tom Turkey Brooch

I love brooches. It seems they are becoming more popular-the flower ones anyways. I made this one to wear on Thanksgiving Day.

My How To:

1-I cut 2 strips of fabric from dark brown fabric to coil into rosettes (this is a great tutorial on that). For the body I cut 1 at 43"x1" & for the head I cut 1 at 23"x1". For the "feathers" I cut 1 at 2"x6", 2 1/4"x6", 2 1/2"x6".

2-Layer the "feather" fabric together and run a gathering stitch along the bottom.

3-Pull tight and tie a knot.

4-Fray the edges by pulling on the strings.

5-Cut slits.

6-Use the fabric rosettes & adhere the "body" to the wooden disc.

7-Attach the head to the body, then add eyes(black rhinestone), beak(scrapbooking paper clips), & the red gobble thing(extra fabric).

8-Glue on a pin attachment to the back.

Here is another one I made with different fabric and I changed the rhinestones eyes to smaller ones-looks better

GIVE THANKS Subway Art

I Love how this turned out. I might just leave this out all year long! What a great item to remember to Give Thanks all the time.

My How To:

I used 5 inch wood letters. I just cut out my letters with some left over bead board wood.

The board measures 11"x20".

After the letters are glued on with some wood glue, spray paint the whole board dark brown.

When the paint is dry, sand the edges and lightly sand the top of the board & letters. I sanded just enough to get it smooth for the vinyl. I like how the 2 different types of wood gave me the look I was going for.

Fruity Syrup Topping

My husband always like something sweet after dinner. As I was flipping through my FoodNetwork magazine I came across this Topping.

In this pan I did: 3/4 cup mixed [frozen] berries(their recipe called for fresh blackberries) + 3/4 cup cut up red grapes + 1/3 cup sugar + 2 Tbl. water. Stir as you cook it on medium heat for 11 mins. You might want to let it cool a bit so it doesn't melt your ice cream.

To assemble: I added these crushed up granola bars(since I didn't have any granola) to the bottom then ice cream(but greek yogurt was yummy also) then top it off with the syrup.

YUM!

Dollar Store Find

I went to the Dollar Store(DollarTree) for some cards. I was going to use them for a different purpose but when I came home, I realized this card would frame very nicely. I love the raised image and beautiful colors.

I cut the front side off (I can use that to make another card later).

I placed it in this frame I had.
I'm so excited to use this Festive Thanksgiving Decoration.

I can't wait to see what I can frame for the other holidays!

Kleenex Box Cover

For one of my daughter's Young Women Personal Progress Project she is stitching Kleenex Box Covers out of plastic canvas for our church building. They are turning out so beautiful. Here is one done-only 1 more to go!

The pieces to be stitched together. Top: 34 squares x 62 squares, (2) long sides: 25 squares x 62 squares, (2) short sides:25 squares x 34 squares.

After putting it all together I sprayed Scotch Guard( at Walmart) to protect it.

Easy Homemade Croutons

For my late snack the other night I had some salad but I didn't have any croutons (which is a must on salad) so I had to use my day old french bread to make some Homemade Croutons! I guessed on the seasoning and oven time. When I took them out of the oven, my husband was already eating some-he said "these are really good".

Here's what I did:

I started with the day old french bread(1/2 loaf). . .

Cut them into cubes, added 1/2 tsp. dried rosemary(basil would taste great also), 1/8 tsp. garlic salt & 1-2 Tbl. of canola oil to moisten it. Cook at 450 for 10-12 mins.

You can add them to your salad or favorite soup! {I'm going to make some for our Halloween night soup bowls} YUM!

Halloween Kitchen Towel

I loved the bright orange color of this dish towel(17"x28") I found at the Dollar(dollar tree) store.

I cut a piece of fabric(10"x19") to match the bottom to cover up the stripes.

Sew the short ends to finish them off.

Fold the "top" & "bottom" of the fabric 1 1/2" down and iron.

Pin the fabric strip to your towel about an inch into the strip for the "sew line". Sew it onto the towel.

Cut slits in the top & bottom rim.

Cut the ends off and then "ruff" it up.

I added some buttons to the circles as an added embellishment.

Halloween {Countdown} #2

Our son is 5 and can't wait for Trick or Treat night!
So he doesn't have to ask me everyday "how many more days until. . . ". We made his very own simple Countdown.

He wrote the numbers by himself and each day he'll put one of the foam stickers we used in Halloween Countdown #1.

I love the excitement Countdowns bring for special events.
Candle Holders can get a little spendy, so I decided to make my own.

I found the vases at the second hand store & the dowel and faucet flanges at the Home Improvement store.

Flanges up close.

1- Cut the dowel (mine is 3/4"x14") to fit inside of your vase. Drill a hole at the top(or you could drill a hole for an eye screw-which I should have done, my dowels broke a little with drilling). I put rocks in the base of the vase to weight it down. Also squeeze some glue down there.

2- Take some pliers to fold in the middle part of the flange. It will make it tight around the dowel.

3- Glue, using E6000, the ring onto the top of the vase.

4- Spray paint the whole thing along with the 2x4 piece of wood(12" long) a glossy black.

5- Cut strips of fabric (1 1/2"x54") to braid together. I used purple-#1 strand/orange & black-#2 strand and green with the orange crazy yarn- #3 strand.

6- Thread the fabric braid through the hole in the top of the dowel & tie a knot.

7- Unfold the big size paper clips (found at the Dollar Tree Dollar store) to hang the tags off of the "rope".

8-The Countdown Tags.

I cut some white cardstock then "aged" the edges with my black stamp pad. Finish the tags with some foam shapes & colored glitter glue(Walmart).

9- Adhere the vinyl lettering to the 2x4 wood block. Sand the edges.

Its now ready to countdown the days til Trick or Treat Night!

{Modern} Decor

I love decorating & Nate Berkus is one of my top favorites! He has a lot of inexpensive ways to decorate to personalize your space. One day he showed how you can take a statue image from a second hand store, spray paint it white(see the rhino on his site?) to give it a more "modern" type look. I figured that could work for Halloween as well.

So I found this owl at the second hand store for $2.00.

Even though it was so nicely painted, I spray painted it with gloss black. I love the spookyness it gives with the black.

My friend Keva shared this great idea with me. I was so excited to make some Painted Pumpkins.

Just the Ordinary Pumpkins.

I used painters tape to tape the lines of where to paint with my leftover "home" paint.

Finished painting. To complete them (picture at top of post)I tied some tulle around the stem in a knot and cut slits in the ends then ripped it (to the knot)to give it the "ruff" edge look.

Ordinary turned into Extra-ordinary.

Super Super Simple Enchiladas

I needed a super simple meal for dinner tonight. I just used a bunch of items I already had on hand. Enchiladas are a favorite around here so it was perfect.

Ingredients

Coat the pan(I used 11x7) with cooking spray. Then lay a layer of baby corn tortillas down.

Add the shredded cheese and shredded beef.[You could add other items such as onions, tomatoes, peppers- but I decided I didn't want to cut all that up].

Pour 3/4 of the 28 oz. can of enchiladas sauce over the top. Cover with foil and bake at 375 for 30 mins. When done remove foil and top with cheese-bake another 5 mins.

When its fully cooked you can garnish it with shredded lettuce and sour cream.
Enjoy!

Helpful Beading Tools

I was helping my friend Cristi get ready for our craft day at church. She brought up this tip, so I had to share.

Since she hasn't made the investment yet on this bead tray{which in my book is a must have}.

She mentioned that felt fabric would help the beads not roll around everywhere.

The thought then came to my mind that you could use a piece of molding as the bead tray. The groove is where you would place the beads before stringing them.

Remembering the Leftovers

I've had too many moldy Leftovers because I can't remember when I put them in the frig. Since were in the restaurant business we have to put dates on everything. I realized I needed to do this quick tip at home.

I just use these plain white circle labels to put the item name & date of when it was cooked & then its ready to be organized in the frig. Before I wash the container I just take the circle sticker off.

Car Hair Kit

Our kids drink juice like water running out of a faucet. So I like to keep some on hand all the time. [Although with all the cavities that the Dentist found, they have to brush right afterwards].
I like using the drink power found at Walmart to mix with my real fruit juice that I can during the summer months. It helps things go further but also is more healthy.

This is Walmart's NEW Drink Powder Container. I am lovin' it.

My New Old Rags

My grandpa taught me a great trick to get the most wear out of a piece of clothing. When that clothing item is either too small, ripped or stained use it as a Paint Rag.

Before I gave some of the girls' clothes to the second hand store, I went through them to see if there was any I could keep. I found a great pile.

This sure beats spending more money on new ones{plus they have style}!

Go To Sauce

I was given 5 bags of tomatoes so I had to use this wonderful recipe my SIL Fabiana gave me - Little Joe's Sauce. Its my GO TO Sauce -you can use it a few different ways so its a great sauce to always have on hand. A Homemade YUMMY!

#1 Spaghetti Sauce: 1 pint jar LJ Sauce + 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce [could + 1 (6oz) can tomato paste if you want it thicker]
#2 Soup Base: Put LJ Sauce in a crockpot and + your choice of meat, beans, veggies to go with it
#3 Cook over meat: use on Roast Beef or other meat. Pour it over and bake in oven.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup olive oil
3 medium onions( I food process these)
4 stalks celery (I food process these)
1/4 cup minced garlic
8 cups tomatoes (I cut them up, measure the 8 cups then food process them)
5 1/2 cups chicken broth
1 Tbl. dry ground oregano
1 tsp. dry rosemary
4 bay leaves(crushed with hands)
2 tsp. dry basil
1 Tbl. black pepper
1/8 cup salt
{I added 1 cup of dehydrated red&green peppers}

Put all the ingredients in a big pot. Turn it on high to start a boil then turn down to low temp and cook for 2 1/2 hours. Stirring occasionally. Put in hot sterilized jars and Water Bath them for 30 mins.

Yields: about 7 pints jars

Inspiration Wall Board

Now that the kids are back in school, I can create using some of my inspirations from my Inspiration Wall Board.

This was suppose to be the door for our Pantry, but it was too heavy to hang so I now use it in my craft room for ideas that inspire me to CREATE!

Its just an old door with glued on magnetic sheeting propped up against the wall. I used magnets to hang the papers/ideas.

Doughnut Breakfast Sandwich

One day I was watching Paula Deen (I love that lady!) & she did an interesting Burger.

This is my version as a Breakfast Sandwich.

I used the best doughnuts out there.

Cut the doughnut in 1/2.

Layer with spinach, egg whites & turkey bacon. I had to add healthy to it so I could justify eating a doughnut loaded with calories. [FYI: I didn't add any sauce but you could do salsa, miracle whip, mayo or other]

Since tomorrow is National Grandparents Day, I thought I would show you a "great" gift I made for my mom a couple of years ago.

I was inspired by this book(by Gaby Goldsack) I read to our son.

This is my version. I got a board book at the second hand store to alter.

Our family pictures.

My mom & me. In the pocket on the right, I wrote a note to her telling her why she is a "great" grandma to our kids.

In the pages following I had each of the kids, on their page, write why they love her.

I know this is special to her because she displays it in her living room on the fireplace mantle.

Simple Ones

Cars. I had this bag leftover from a family reunion treat. I decided to stitch on a car cutout so we knew that is where those go.

Mormon Ads. Great reminders. You can get these here.

ABC Book. This is one of my favorites! When the girls were little it was a great help to learn the ABC's but now it just helps during the Sacrament when they are supposed to be focusing on the Savior.

Magnet container with Sticker Magnets

I started with a tin I found at the second hand store, stickers(walmart) & magnetic sheet(walmart/craft stores).

Place the stickers on the magnetic sheeting.

Cut around the stickers with your scissors-as close as you can.

Place them in ziplock baggies, label them then place the baggies inside the container for easy storage. They will use the container as their magnetic surface.

Magnetic sand to create on a face.

Stitching Cards with Gospel Pictures. I just printed the pictures on card stock paper.

I started with these stitching cards (found these at Michaels" & used my 40% coupon)

I wound the laces on the ribbon cards (found at scrapbook stores/walmart) so they wouldn't get lost or tangled up.

Cut out the pictures and place them face down on the Contact paper (like I did here in this post)

Use double stick tape so it adhere's to the stitching card.

Adhere to the front. I did both sides of each card.

Church Bag Activities {Part 1 of 5}

WEEK 1

I've been thinking for awhile now that I needed to get something AGAIN put together for our Sunday Church Bag for Sacrament Time. Our 2 youngest still need those activities to do so they will have a greater chance of listening. We usually have not planned well from week to week so we are running late and I will either grab just a few things or nothing at all. So starting yesterday I made a resolve to be prepared every week for Sacrament time. Each week I will have an extra (xlarge ziplock) bag, that changes, to put in our church along with the regular every week items(this post will come on Friday). This way I can just grab the appropriate bag for the appropriate week. Already to go.

This is a dry erase board with special crayons(Walmart had the best price).

This is our "FunStuf" binder. The cutouts are from the Friend magazine & laminated.

Inside the binder with the special wipe off crayons.

*TIP: for both these items we use our microfiber rags. They seem to wipe the board and laminate pages off better.

Hair Accessory Holder

I've been wanting to make a few more Hair Accessories but I haven't had a place to put them until now. It will also be nice for my girls to have a place for theirs'.

I found these door shutters at the second hand store for $15.00 each(so that makes each shutter $7.50). I had a feeling that if I altered it a bit then it could hold all my Accessories.

Here's what I did:
After cleaning & sanding them they were ready for the metal "shelves". I went to Lowe's prepared to buy something that attaches to doors to hold the accessories but they were almost $6.00 & I couldn't cut them down very easily. So I asked a person working there and she mentioned to check down the sheet rock aisle.

This metal is what I found. They are only $1.18 for a 5-6 ft section.

Mark on the metal where you need to cut with your metal shears.

Cut the top & the bottom as far as you can go.

No need to cut here-just bend it back & forth a few times.

A clean break.

To attach the "shelves" to the shutter:

Use pliers(or your hands) to spread it out a little. This will help so you can drill in the screws.

Predrill the metal before you attach it.

Drill in the screws to secure.

Place your hand on the front face and press down so it lays flat.

All the shelves DONE.

Since the metal "shelves" aren't that pretty I cut some fabric to fit the top & front of each one.

"FunStuf" for Church

Monday as we were having Family Home Evening from the Friend magazine, I got looking thru the rest of the magazine & found the "FunStuf" page. The thought came to me to take it out & put in the church bag as a reverent activity for Sacrament meeting. [I laminated them so we can use the wipe off crayons(found at school supply store).]

I just keep all the magazines in this drawer for easy everyday access.

Our girls are old enough to listen with intent but our 5 year struggles to sit on his bum. I hope this activity will keep his mouth quiet & his ears open.

Nail Color Card

I love the items for girls/women that are FUN & make us feel BEAUTIFUL, like Nail Polish.
Whenever I go to the store & want to pick up a nail color I forget what colors I already have, so I to put it back.

I made this card (library card-found at school supply store) up. Each line has its own set of colors. After painting the nail color on the specific line, I tucked the card inside a plastic name badge sleeve(found at Walmart & Dollar store).

Now I can store it in my purse for easy access later.

Fall Off the Bone {Roast Beef}

We had the best meat for dinner last night!

As a kid we had Roast Beef every Sunday. My mom is a great cook but the roast beef was always dry. My sister & I would always use ketchup to dip the meat. So when I found the secret to cooking roast beef (in my BHG magazine), there were no words to describe how elated I was.

I didn't follow the exact recipe but when my husband will have 3rds I know I did it right.

[My version]-Ingredients:

2 1/2-3 lb. beef chuck roast

1 tsp. celery salt

1/2 tsp. dried garlic

1 Tbl. dried minced onions

2 (14 oz.) cans beef broth + 1 can with water

(liquid needs to cover meat)

Cook in the crock pot for 11 hours on low heat.

Clean Cut Brownies

I'm amazed that the brownies don't stick unlike when using a "real" knife.

Tent Trailer Re-Do's for Others

This summer 4 other families, that we like to spend time with, bought used tent trailers (for great deals on Craigslist as well). This includes 2 of my husband's sisters. So along with my own tent trailer re-do this summer, I also helped those 2 sis-in-laws re-do their cushions and curtains.

We did only the cushions on this first one (Tasha's). I did the plain, heavy-duty canvas on the whole thing and sewed the cute stiped material right in with it. Tasha's husband did an amazing job remodeling the entire trailer, both inside and out!! I will have to hit him up for some before/after pics!!

This other one (Cala's) was a LOT of work, but it turned out super savvy (just like her). Their trailer came with grey and burgandy interior and canvas. We stayed with that color scheme and found a classy black/grey pattern on a nice, thick fabric for the cushions.

We used the curtains it came with, but they were a bit short after being washed and dried. So we found some coordinating fabric, of the same thickness, and I added a 3 1/2 inch valance (border) to the top of each curtain with a matching tie for the middle.

We were all very pleased with our interior "re-do's", and have made them fit each of our styles and personalities. We can definately call our trailers a "home away from home" now.

Travels to Lincoln City Oregon

We stayed here. [My families' in-laws rent it out-3 bedrms, 2 bath, kitchen & laundry rm]Its only a couple of blocks away from the beach. So peaceful!

My Tent Trailer Project

We bought a 1986 tent trailer a few years ago for pretty cheap on Craigslist. It was not much to look at. The canvas and screen were brittle and shredded in many places. The wood was moldy. It was not well cared for at all. We had our work cut out for us for sure!

My husband found a wonderful website called PopUpPortal.com that helped a lot in our venture. Fixing up this tent trailer has become a hobby for him ever since. He has since replaced the wood, fixed electrical stuff, repainted the whole exterior, rigged up a way to put up our canopy, and several other things. He continues to come up with new improvements every few weeks.

My part in this whole tent trailer project has been lots and lots of sewing!! I spent many, many hours sewing on this thing, so I think it's time for a little "show and tell"!!

My first project was a biggie- the canvas, itself. Something I NEVER wish to do again! We had to take the entire canvas off the trailer since it was all one piece. We bought some canvas that matched and had to tear out and re-do whole sections of canvas and screen. I did it all with just my Kenmore sewing machine! (Of course I had to use heavy-duty needles and thread to sew on canvas.) I had to set up a long table in the garage, and my husband helped me handle that "beast" while I measured, pinned and sewed. I couldn't have done it without his help!

After the sewing repairs, we still had to patch up the smaller rips and tears; and we continue to do so. The best stuff we have found for patching is called Tear Mender, which we have to order online.

The next thing I decided to re-do in our trailer was our seat cushions. The old ones were not only uncomfy and outdated, but worn as well.

So I found some upholstery fabric at Walmart for $1.50/yard and sewed new covers. I just took off the old covers, unstitched them from the vinyl backing and used them as a pattern to cut new ones. I saved the vinyl backing (with zippers still attached) since they were still in pretty good shape, and sewed on the new fabric to fit the cushions. The hardest ones to do were the bunk ends. But the seat cushions were really not too bad!

I just recently re-did the curtains since the old ones were moldy and stained. I happended to find some more great fabric at Walmart for a great price. So for very little money and a whole lot of time, I was able to add my personal touch to make the inside of our trailer look and feel warm and cozy for camping!

And I LOVE how it turned out! Next I would like to use my leftover fabric to make coordinating bedspreads for the 2 bunk ends. Maybe next year though. Whew!

Dear Parent. . .

I sub a lot in Primary[partly because I'm in the Stake Primary but also I need the blessings so I rarely say no].
As I have taught, the kids say the cutest/profound/funny/well thought insights about the lessons.

I am truly amazed at how much they really know & how tender their little hearts are.
I want their parents to know of the wonderful things that I get to hear. {I know I'm always curious what our kids say when we are not there}.
During the lesson, I wrote down things they said. Then later, I wrote a little note card to the parent. You could give it to the parent or send it to them. (Us parents NEED more FUN mail these days-I know I do).

I know we need a little positive boost every once in a while letting us know we are doin' good in one way or another!

LEGO Storage

Our daughter's birthday is today. I'm so excited to surprise her with this LEGO Table I made for her. She is a Lego fanatic. She is always coming up with or asking for ideas to build wonderful Lego creations.

This is her current one-a little small.

This is her new one- a better surface to build. This one measures 40" x 60".

I got this coffee table from the second hand store(goodwill).

I framed out the top board with some molding wood. Secure the top piece to the table with wood glue & brad (finishing)nails -I used my air compressor nail gun. remember to fill the nail holes with wood putty & then sand it.

Its ready to paint.

Painted & sealed(with a spray clear coat).

I used this adhesive( at Home Depot) to put down the Lego boards(found at ToysRus but they are online also). TIP: Don't use this in the heat of the day. I learned the hard way & had to reglue the boards.

I used some Legos to hold the boards together for perfect spacing.

Done. [I would like to add some vinyl lettering with building/Lego words-if I do I'll post the pic]

{Cleaning} Apron

To make it easier for the kids to do their cleaning jobs I made them Cleaning Aprons. The aprons have pockets to hold the cleaners & rags.

I had some jean material to use. Cut 2 pieces of fabric into a rectangle(23"x15"). Cut 2 pieces of fabric(23"x7") for the pocket strip. Nice & heavy Duty.

Sew around. I didn't sew a finished edge because they only use them once a week & with jean I like the "aged" look.

For the top to tie around waist:

Cut 1 piece of fabric (5"x65"). Fold in & iron.

Attach the "tie" to the top of the jean fabric. Starting at one end of the "tie" stitch across the top, side, bottom, then other side.

Finished.

You could also put grommets on the rags & use the office badge clips(found at Walmart) to attach to the apron.

JOY in Service

We took hold of the greatest SERVICE opportunity today.

Our friends [a few houses down] are moving back east. We are going to miss them. They are some of the most kind people we have come in contact with. Today the movers were packing up the last of their things.

The kids & I got our cleaning supplies(I buy my home friendly ones here) and headed down to do some cleaning.

I made these aprons awhile back to wear and hold their cleaning bottle & rag.

Tin Foil Dinners

We've been up camping, a handful of times already, this year. One of our most favorite things about each camping trip is our first meal there- Tin Foil Dinners. Our kids even ask for them now, even when we are not camping. We love them!

HOW do YOU make your tin foil dinners? WHAT do YOU put in them? Please leave me a comment on this. I am always looking for new ideas.

HERE is how I make OURS...

Mine consist of these items:
Heavy Duty tin foil
Raw hamburger meat (lean ground beef)
Cream of mushroom soup
Potatos- peeled and cut small
Carrots- peeled and cut small
Frozen white corn
Dry onion flakes
Garlic salt- lots!
Pepper, olive oil, other herbs or spices I think of adding in, etc.

I peel and cut up the veggies (into small, bite-sized pieces so they will cook faster with the meat). I combine all the cut-up veggies, frozen corn, and dry onion flakes into a large bowl and mix them together with a little bit of olive oil.

I tear off a piece of tin foil and lay it flat. Then I spoon out some cream of mushroom soup (right from the can) and smear it onto the foil in the center. I put about a cup of veggies down first (on top of the soup).

Then I grab some raw hamburger and flatten it like a patty to put on top of the veggies. (Big enough to cover the veggies and about 1/2" thick. I sprinkle LOTS of garlic salt over the meat (and some pepper) and top it off with another cup of veggies. Then I dollup another spoonfull or two of soup over the veggies and fold up the foil to seal it all in. After wrapping it once, I get another piece of foil and wrap it again for better protection in the fire.

I make them big so we can all share. We cook these foil dinners right in our campfire. DELISH!! Clean-up is super easy with this meal. I love it for camping!! Do you make foil dinners too? What do you put in them??

Summer Canning

I am finally done with my summer Canning!

I found this new Canning magazine from BHG(on stands til Aug 9th). LOVE it!

I was able to try 15 new recipes(some of my favs: nectarine vanilla/ blueberry pecan/ kiwi lime). I have already tried some of them & I have not been disappointed at all.

I LOVE Homemade Jam- it truly is the best!

Being a {REAL} Mom

As part of my goals this summer I need to read a new book each week. Well, after I started reading this wonderful book(found @ Deseret Book but good deal here), I realized this one is a "work"book. This lady is amazing!

She breaks down 12 simple things we can do as mothers to be better[and more REAL] & to help our children be happy. Each Secret takes 21 days to form the habit of doing. So in the next 8 months or so I hope to accomplish having a greater perspective. I know it was meant for me right now. Lately I've been informing our children of ways they can change & do things. Nothing has really changed. Then after reading this book, its actually ME who needs to change so they will want to change & be happy.

I'm only on the first Secret & I've already had a few trials to put this secret to use. I'm grateful to have a notebook (my "Ponder Pad" as Carlene Tanner would say)to write down my thoughts/challenges/feelings.

I love Good Books that motivate you to act!

ToothPaste Drawer

As I was cleaning up & putting stuff away from the weekend, I happen to open this drawer to find this. . .

YIKES!

So to help in the Tooth Paste Disaster, I put those Sticky Tiles (from Lowes/HomeDepot) in the drawer like I did here. I know when the wood bubbles up from too much moisture that it is not going to last long.

I think we'll have to have the "clean up after yourself" talk AGAIN. I guess I have to give them some credit-after all, they are kids.

Swimming Pool Birthday Cake

For my son's 10th birthday 2 weeks ago, he had chosen to do a pool party. So I looked online for cake ideas, and was inspired by Google Images and Berry Blue Jell-o!!

This cake was so much fun and easy to make! Here is what I used for mine:

-2 White Cake Mixes (each made by adding 1/4 c inst. vanilla pudding, 1 1/4 c milk, 1/2 c veg. oil, 4 eggs, and a tsp of vanilla) and baked in 9x13 pans

-2 Boxes (4 serving size) Berry Blue Jell-O + 2 c boiling water

-Buttercream Frosting

-Food Coloring (opt.)

-Candy, Polly Pocket dolls, Paper umbrellas, wafer cookies, etc.

I did some things differently than the lady on the video...

I baked my cakes ahead of time and froze them overnight. I layered 2 cakes on top of one another. I tried and failed the first time with the "quick set" ice method for the jello. My advice is to let the jello cool to room temp, then poor into cake pool and refrigerate. I tinted the frosting a light gray color for around the pool. Polly Pockets are a perfect fit for this cake!

KeyChain Collection

I LOVE to Travel.

Because of our business we usually have to travel in the spring &/or fall time. But if we go anywhere I always pick up a KeyChain to add to my collection!

I used an old cupboard door. I glued (with Mod Podge)on the craft wrapping paper. Then I used mini license plates(found at the scrapbook store) for each state with a nail to hang the keychains.

Perfect {Sunny Up} EGGS

My friend Holly shared a wonderful tip with me a while back on how to make perfect Sunny Side Up Eggs. I have been using this method ever since.

Spray your pan, crack your eggs into it, put 1 ice cube inside then put a lid on top. The steam from the ice cooks the egg. No need to flip it over. No broken yolks.

Even though SUMMER is filled with fun activities, its still great to keep invigorating the mind & working towards personal goals. This next month our kids will be setting some goals. As a reward for the goals met, they will be able to earn extra money to buy school clothes/shoes. (For each school year I usually set a budget & so anything beyond that has to be bought from them.)

I got a 12x12 piece of card stock paper. Divide the paper into four sections: 1-Physical 2-Spiritual 3-Educational 4-Other. Each area they need to set 2 goals. Not only could this give them a sense of accomplishment but hopefully some one on ones & a desire to continue goal setting(knowing its not just at the beginning of the calendar year). I stamped a circle for each day in the month of July for them to fill in or put a sticker on.

Here is what they came up with. I'm so excited for them!
