Tuesday Tutorial- "Cream of " Recipes

(Sorry... I did this post last night and scheduled it to show up this morning. I just came on this evening and realized that I typed in the wrong date. Oops!! Here goes...)

My friend Kim emailed me these recipes for cream of soup and other scratch recipes. Her mom (who sent them to her) is in Sweden right now and says that there are not a lot of canned cream of soups there. These are some good recipes for using your food storage. Thanks Kim!

ROUX ( a thickener) can be used to thicken soups, gravy or whatever you need.
Mix 2 C flour and 1 C butter or margarine together until well blended. It will look like small peas. Store in refrigerator. When ready to use, add a little at a time to hot liquid. Stir constantly until the preferred consistency is reached.

HOMEMADE CREAM SOUP MIX (no fat)
2 C powdered nonfat milk, 3/4 C cornstarch, 5 chicken bouillon cubes. 2 Tablespoons dried onion flakes. 2 teaspoon basil and 1 tsp thyme leaves. 1/2 tsp pepper. Combine al ingredients. Mix well. Store in airtight container. Equals 9 cans of soup. For one can soup: Combine 1/3 C dry soup mix with 1 1/4 C cold water in a saucepan. Stir and cook until thickened. Add to casserole as you would canned product.
For Mushroom soup: Add a 4 ounce can of mushrooms with juice as part of the liquid called for in recipe.

WHITE SAUCE
Thin: for vegetables and soups. For each cup sauce: 1 T butter, 1/2 -1 T flour, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp pepper and 1 C milk.
Medium: For creamed and scalloped foods. 2 T butter, 2 T flour, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp pepper and 1 C milk
Thick: 1/4 C butter, 1/4 C flour, 1/4 tsp salt, 1/8 tsp pepper, 1 C milk.
Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Blend in flour, salt and pepper. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in milk. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute.

Variations:
Cheese sauce: for vegetables, rice, macaroni and egg dishes. Prepare medium sauce. Stir in 1/4 tsp dry mustard and 1/2 C shredded cheese. Heat over low heat stirring constantly, until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth. Note...for richer cheese sauce and 1 C shredded cheese, 1 Tsp dry mustard, and add 1/2 - 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce. Heat over low heat till smooth.
Curry sauce: for chicken, lamb, shrimp and rice. Follow directions for medium white sauce and stir in 1/2 tsp curry powder with the flour.
Dill sauce: for meat or fish. Follow recipe for medium sauce and stir in 1 tsp minced fresh dill or 1/2 tsp dill weed with flour. Can add a dash of nutmeg if desired.

GRAVY:
A good brown gravy can be made from the juice from meatballs or any other beef drippings (or poultry). Add 2-3 T flour and stir into the juice of the frying pan. If not much juice is available, add some water (1/2 C) and stir until flour is a smooth paste. Add a little more water or milk and stir until thick and bubbly. Salt, onion salt and even a little beef, or chicken bouillon can be added if drippings or juice from meat is not available. Potato flour or corn starch can also be added as a thickener. Put 1 T in a cup, add a little water and stir to dissolve. Add to hot boiling liquid and stir till thick. If you want it thicker add more potato flour or corn starch or flour. If too thick, add a little more liquid..

Friday Faves- Oil Eater

Have you heard of this stuff? My mom recently told me about Oil Eater. It's amazing stuff! It will get grease out of anything, including your laundry!! You can find it at Costco. I haven't checked, but I'm sure places like Home Depot would also have it?

I am newer to this stuff, but my mom swears by it. She says it takes grease stains out of everything. Last night she used it on her concrete walk way becasue the kids spilt something on it and it left a spot. Oil eater took it right up. She just sprayed it on the spots and took her toilet brush (that she doesn't use on the toilet) to lightly scrub it with, then hosed it off. Good as new! And it works miracles on clothing!! Pin It

My Town Monday- Don't Get Bored in Idaho

We moved!! Yep, this week was a whirlwind of packing and moving. (I'm so glad that part is over!) Everything we own is in our garage. We are staying with my parents for a couple of weeks. I don't have my computer hooked up yet (with the pictures on it), so I can't do the My Town Monday post I had planned for today.

Not a problem though, because my friend Amanda has a really cool blog about MY TOWN called Don't Get Bored in Idaho. I've mentioned her blog before when it was brand new, but if you are a newer reader of mine you may not have heard about it. She goes and does things in our area and blogs about them. She also has a huge links list of sites to check out on things to do here! It's fantastic!! Pin It

Friday Faves- Kraft Food & Family

Do YOU get this Kraft Food & Family magazine in your mailbox every season? I do, and I LOVE it!! I never signed up to get it, so maybe everyone gets one? Well, if you do get this magazine/cookbook, don't just toss it in the garbage (like I used to do) thinking it's just junk mail with a few Kraft coupons. There are some great recipes in there! My sister and I were looking through mine today, searching for some new dinner inspiration and found some really tasty-looking new recipes in there.

I also have to tell you, that every recipe I have tried from these magazines have been super easy, delicious and family friendly! Have YOU tried any of them? Pin It

"Recognize that the joy of motherhood comes in moments. There will be hard times and frustrating times. But amid the challenges, there are shining moments of joy and satisfaction."
-M. Russell Ballard

"The biggest mistake I made [as a parent] is the one that most of us make...I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of [my three children] sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages six, four and one. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not beeen in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less."

My Town Monday- OTHER MOTHERS

Other Mothers is located in West Boise on Fairview and Five Mile Rds. It has been here (in virtually the same spot) for many years.

This store is responsible for EVERYTHING I own (past or present) for my children. Their clothing, their cribs, highchairs, carseats, strollers, toys, ANYTHING that I buy for the kiddos are from Other Mothers.
If you have not been to Other Mothers, here is how it works:

You can trade in your gently used baby furniture, outgrown kids' clothing- sizes 0 to 14, maternity clothing, toys, etc. for an in-store credit or cash. The cash is given as soon as the trade-in is done and the credit is put onto your account on the computer to use that day or any time within 2 years of the trade-in date.

Things brought in must be clean (laundered) and neat. They won't accept anything with stains, rips, missing buttons, broken, etc. for obvious reasons. Things they don't take will be given back to you or donated to the 25 cent sale. That is your choice.

Here are the 2 managers of the store, Jodi and Lynn. We love them!!

Here are a few other girls that work there.

The last Friday and Saturday of every month, Other Mothers has their 25 CENT SALE!! It's crazy! Everything that is donated gets stored in big garbage bags all month and put in storage, and on QUARTER SALE morning Val (the owner) loads his truck full and puts it all out onto tables in front of the store.

Twice a year Other Mothers has an "Off-Site 25 Cent Sale" in April and October. That means a much bigger sale, with furniture and everything! The Off-Site sale is coming up in a few weeks, and will be held in the same strip mall as Other Mothers. I personally don't know the exact date, but I'll post the details when I find out!

Halloween costumes!!! TODAY is the day!!! Drop what you are doing and get over there so you don't miss out! There are tons of costumes in all sizes. They go FAST, so I would get over there asap!

Happy shopping!! Pin It

Friday Faves- Twilight

Okay, so I'm not a reader. I don't read or watch much TV. I just don't have time (or take the time). I blog, emial, blog-surf (well if I even have time for that).

I've also never loved to read, which makes me feel like a minority. School was hard for me growing up, because comprehension was not a strength of mine. It seems like EVERYONE has read or is reading the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. Most are the 4th book (or just finished). Whenever the girls would be together they all talk about Bella and Edward, and I couldn't relate.

Well, I have FINALLY jumped on the band-wagon ladies!! I'm half way through the first book, and can hardly put it down! I've only had the book for one week, so this is huge for me! I am completely absorbed! I find myself thinking about it a lot, and even when I just have a few minutes, I open the book to try and read as much as I can.

Edward and Bella are getting me through my stressful times as well. It's been a nice release for me. If you have not read this book, I highly recommend it! Even if you are not a big reader, like me. I promise, you might surprise yourself! So jump on with us!!

Have you read this series?? Tell me what YOU think!! Pin It

Tuesday Tutorial- Stress Management

I have a lot of stress in my life right now... I didn't have time to prepare my tutorial for today, becasue I don't already have pictures of it. Shame on me!! Even worse, I left my camera at a friend's house over the weekend. Bla, bla bla... Poor me right?

If you are stressed like me, I found us a great tutorial:

Just copy/paste this picture to your "My Pictures" and you can print it (I think).

Okay, does anyone know how to put things into PDF format for easy printing?? (My husband probably already knows the answer to this.) Do any of you know how? Maybe it can be a future "tute" of mine. {{chuckle}} Pin It

My Town Monday- Positive Parenting Class

I am so excited about parenting class! It starts this Tuesday Sept. 9th. It's called Positive Parenting, (taught by Carleen Tanner). It's a 10-week class (per sememster), and there are 2 times to choose from:

-Tuesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 at the LDS church on Birch and Garrity in Nampa. On Tuesdays they will provide child care for $3 per child.
-Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 at the Meridian High School Seminary building on Pine and Linder. No child care offered on Thursday evenings.

The class cost per semester is $12.50, payable to BYU-Idaho.
You do not need to pre-register. Just show up. (They will have an envelope there the first few weeks for you to sign up and drop in your fee, and you can take care of that before or after class.)

Come as you are. No need to dress up. Yay!

Many of my readers are members of my same church. If you are not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, you are still more than invited to come to parenting class! It's for everyone wanting to be a better parent!

Some notes about this class:
-It is religeously based, but
you do not have to believe in our religion to come. Carleen T. teaches tried and true practices and principles to help us raise responsible, independant, virtuous adults. She has raised 10 children to be just that.
-It is for parents of kids of all ages and stages.
-You may wonder if this class is going to make you feel guilty, like you won't measure up and you're doing it all wrong. Not at all the case! It's all about changing percentages, and getting our "buckets filled" with tools and inspiration for a happier home and stronger family.
-You may think that if you go to a parenting class it means you are a bad parent, and others might see you seeking help because of it. NO WAY! :-) We are all there because we want to raise great kids and we ALL need help (whether we think we do or not)! Kids don't come with instructions (darn it)!
-Just a few of the many topics Carleen covers in this class: Self Esteem, Positive Discipline, Establishing Order (in the home), Praise vs. Encouragement, Competition vs. Cooperation, Teaching Responsibility and Work, Marriage.
-I am not "advertising" this to get gain for anyone else or myself. I am sharing this for YOU. I've been taking this class over and over for years, and I still learn something new each time. It strengthens me as a wife and mother and gives me the courage to keep going! I feel obligated to tell everyone, because it has changed my life so much and I don't want you to miss out.

If you have any questions, just emial me. (link on right sidebar) Pin It

Friday Faves- Dove Self-Esteem Fund

Need I say more? Go Dove! Pin It

Thursday, September 4, 2008

In lew of the republican convention going on right now, I thought I would share a quote I love from former republican first lady of the United States, Barbara Bush...

"Whatever the era, whatever the times, one thing will never change; fathers and mothers, if you have children, they must come first. You must read to your children, you must hug your children, and you must love your children. Your success as a family, our success as a society, depends not on what happens in the White House, but on what happens in your house." Pin It

Tuesday Tutorial- Coupon Clipper

My friend Gina got the greatest idea from her next door neighbor, Tammy. She made a coupon binder to organize and keep track of all her coupons. Brilliant!!

All she did was buy a 3-ring notebook, a pack of plastic page dividers with pockets, and a pack of baseball card holders; all from Wal-mart.

She labeled the dividers into different categories.

When she clips her coupons, they go into the basball card holders so they can be seen at a glance. The pockets on the dividers are for the bigger and/or bulkier coupons.

What a fantastic idea! Thanks Gina, for letting me share you and Tammy's creativity. Great job! Pin It

My Town Monday- Scrappy Birthday

I met a fun mom-pruneuer a few weeks ago named Elysianna, who owns a business called "Scrappy Birthday".

Basically, what she does is kind of like the Stampin UP monthly groups. Except, you don't have to buy all the products. You'll just come and make a project every month. There are lots of projects to choose from; like layouts, mini books, circle tins, wood letters, etc. She offers her projects in groups and will also do birthday parties!

Would you like to come meet Elysianna and see her stuff? She is having a Scrappy Birthday Open House next Thursday, Sept. 11 from 7 to 9 pm at the Redfeather Clubhouse. Your are invited!! There will be drawings for freebies and treats, of course. Directions: Off Ustick, between Eagle and Cloverdale. Turn on Grenadier (left from Cloverdale, Right from Eagle) into Redfeather subdivision. Clubhouse is on the left, by the pool.

If you sign up for a group at the Open House you will get 10% off your first 3 projects! If you mention The Creative Homemaker you will get 10% off a project too. Go check it out! I'll post her website address once it's up and going. Stay tuned for that! Pin It
